Cast Iron

PAMPERED CHEF CAST IRON SKILLET

The Cast Iron Skillets were the first products to be in the company’s new visual brand language. This was a close partnership with a prominent American cast iron foundry. For this project I led the industrial design from concept through manufacturing.

Teammates: Chris Cunningham, Michael Mastroianni

Divergent Ideation

Many concepts were considered that explored overall shape, ergonomics, and a design that allows for future accessories.

Refined Ideation

Through discussions with the team and test kitchen the two options that came from the divergent ideation are shown below. Both include a double handle design to dictate the behavior of a two handed lift. The squared circle shape allows for slightly more surface area which assists with cooking for a family of four. Holes were to be added to assist with the manufacturing seasoning process and provide a heat break for the handles.

FDM Prototypes

The prototypes shown below were instrumental in improving the ergonomics and creating a unique design.

Details

The interior geometry of the skillet perfectly matches our wooden spoon that is currently in the product line. The handles “Hug” around the skillet and smoothly transition into the rim.

The 10 inch skillet (shown on the left) is mostly used for baking and side dishes. The 12 inch skillet (shown on the right) is sized to make a main course for a family of four.
